The Field at Caromont
~Therapy from the ground up~
Kidding Season 2016 unintentionally changed a lot of lives here at Caromont Farm, beginning with mine. Two thousand (yes, 2,000) people from all over the world answered a simple request on Social Media to help us with the care and feeding of 120 + newly born goat kids. People from every walk of life signed up for a shift on the farm, including veterans with PTSD, victims of domestic abuse and sexual assault, autistic children, the terminally ill, and scores of city folk just wanting a day in the country with their kids. It was joyful, energizing, and frequently heartbreaking to share in people’s stories. As the next three weeks went by, what became evident was that our working farm was doing something much bigger. We were providing necessary healing experiences for people who were hurting in many different ways. Sadly, we had to cut it off after only two months because our small farm could not handle this many people. But, a girl can dream!
Our goal is to not have to turn anyone away in 2017, and hopefully for many years ahead. We plan to acquire the adjoining 24 acres of land next to Caromont Farm -- and we need your help to do it. We will partner with "A Fertile Foundation," an established Charlottesville non-profit that in the past has been a roving Farm Therapy Service. Tara Hodge’s expertise is with horses, and her past work with “at risk” teens and physically handicapped adults is truly awesome. I proposed to her a partnership that could provide a home for “Fertile” with the added animal and farming education programs from Caromont. She loved the idea and “The Field” was born. This property can provide a permanent space for what was started last year with the baby goats, as well as a place for the continuation of Tara’s work. "The Field" provides the terra firma, the baby goats provide unending and unconditional love, and we can start working on that list of people we had to turn away. We ask for your support and invite you to join our very fertile Caromont “farmily”. We can’t wait to get started!
